In a press release provided to Bitcoin.com News, Democratic legislators and activists announced their intention to hold a rally in opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump’s meme coin dinner gala. Framing the event as a rebuke of transactional politics, the senators and demonstrators stated that they will be united under the banner of the ‘America Is Not for Sale’ rally, calling for a definitive halt to pay-to-play influence.

Demonstrators to Descend on Trump’s Gala as Crypto Criticism Mounts

It’s well known that Democratic lawmakers have long expressed discontent with Trump’s leadership, but in the absence of significant congressional leverage, they have increasingly turned to public demonstrations as a means of resistance. Such is the case with the forthcoming dinner Trump is hosting at the Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls, Virginia. According to Our Revolution, a progressive political group, both protesters and legislators are expected to gather outside the venue to make their views heard.

“Trump is now set to reward the top 220 buyers of his $TRUMP coin, many of whom are foreign-based, with an invitation to Thursday’s dinner, and the top 25 coin holders will receive a ‘VIP White House tour,’” the Our Revolution press release explains. “According to blockchain tracking data, the memecoin has already raised nearly $150 million, and Trump personally stands to become one of the wealthiest crypto holders in the world.”

Our Revolution characterizes itself as the country’s largest grassroots political organization, highlighting that the bulk of its financial support comes from individual contributors. Still, as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, the group is not legally required to disclose all donor identities. Filings indicate it has accepted sizable personal contributions in the past, with some exceeding $100,000. A watchdog group, Common Cause, lodged a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), alleging the organization “violated the federal ‘soft money’ ban.”

During the demonstration, Our Revolution says participants will display signs reading ‘STOP CRYPTO CORRUPTION,’ enlarged depictions of Trump’s meme coin, and banners denouncing political bribery and foreign interference. U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) is also scheduled to deliver remarks at the rally.

“Trump’s solicitation schemes for money, gifts and power are out of control. Between his outrageous meme coin grift, his Tesla car show on the White House lawn, his consideration to accept a gifted jumbo jet from Qatar and numerous candlelight dinners for his tech bros and foreign billionaires, Trump’s priority goes to the highest bidder,” Public Citizen Co-President Robert Weissman said in the release.
